Acupuncture is a widely accepted holistic treatment option that is used to stimulate healing or provide pain relief for animals of all species. It is a virtually painless procedure that involves the insertion of needles into specific points on the body to activate the animal’s immune system and cause the release of serotonin and endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers. Acupuncture is used in veterinary medicine either alone or in conjunction with western medicine.
Acupuncture works well for musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis, back pain or weakness, ligament, joint, nerve and muscle injuries. It can also be helpful for chronic gastro-intestinal problems, respiratory conditions, endocrine disorders, neurological disorders, and some behavioral problems.
Acupuncture is nearly painless for small animals; most pets tolerate it and even enjoy it. Once the needles are gently inserted into the skin and are in place, most animals become very relaxed and even sleepy. The length and number of treatments will depend upon the condition of the patient. Some animals will need 4-6 visits before the owner can recognize any change in the pet, however, it is not uncommon for results to be noticed as soon as the first visit.
Lake Area Animal Hospital offers this alternative course of treatment to pets in the Lake Charles area and beyond.
